Why are so many people religious?

Why are so many people religious? Well, putting aside the question of which religion is right what we are seeing is evidence that Jesus spoke truthfully during his sermon on the mount when he said (Matthew 5:some verse I can't remember right now), "Happy are those CONSCIOUS of their spiritual need". The indication there being that we ALL have that built into us, we just need to be aware of it.
